A series of paintings inspired by the hedgerows of home

I love strawberries!
Bright, beautiful and, to my mind, nature’s very own sweets. They’ve long been associated with romance, indulgence and summer, but for me, strawberries bring back a very particular memory.
Walking out the Bawn Road in Killeshandra with Mam or Dad, I’d fill my pockets with wild strawberries. Tiny, sweet and warm from the summer sun, they were the best kind of treat.
I don’t see many wild strawberries these days, and I’m not sure my cautious adult self would be quite so happy about picking and eating them straight from the roadside! These days, my strawberries come neatly packed in punnets from the fruit shop or supermarket around Belfast.
But I still can’t eat one without thinking of the Bawn Lake.
So, it’s no surprise that strawberries have found their way into my paintings. This new series is a little celebration of their colour, joy and sweetness — and of those simple childhood memories that stay with us, even when we’re far from home.
